Jonathan Fowler
Jonathan Fowler is a senior consultant with widely recognized expertise in community engagement with Indigenous communities, sustainability and social aspects of mining. He has 53 years of experience in mining and community engagement including deep expertise in procurement and Indigenous people’s engagement.
His experience includes 46 years with De Beers and extensive cross-Canada work since 1983. He joined Anglo American Corporation of South Africa in 1968 and was seconded and eventually transferred to De Beers. He has worked in Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Kalaallit Nunaat and Canada. His sustainability focus includes corporate social responsibility as well as overseeing implementation of best practices within De Beers Canada exploration and mining projects.
He is an alumnus of the University of London, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Special) Honours degree in geology in 1968 (Bedford College), a M.Phil. degree in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1982. He is an Eur. Geol. in the European Union. In 2019 he published a book entitled “Community Engagement with Canadian Indigenous Peoples: A Practitioner’s Handbook.
